The violent, repressive Khmer Rouge ended only a generation ago (1979) and most of Cambodia has been slow to recover from the brutal genocide of up to 3,000,000 citizens (25% of the population) due to malnutrition, torture, and warfare. The Khmer Rouge decimated the professional and intellectual citizenry and destroyed educational institutions and programs in their desire to return the country to an ethnically pure and agrarian society.
An impoverished country in the developing world, 80% of Cambodia is still considered rural and undeveloped, lacking even basic sanitation and nutritional resources.
KHK has a concrete plan to improve the lives of the children of Stung Treng and is getting results. You can help by directly contributing because the future of Cambodia depends on it.
“There are many problems, but I think there is a solution to all these problems; it’s just one, and it’s education.” Malala Yousafza.
Education: You can read about the inspiring work KHK has accomplished since 2012 on www.KHKfoundation.org because they are a hands-on, on-site active organization. In their first year of operation, the KHK Foundation started construction of a five room school to replace the leaning, dark shed Streng Tung had for their 200 students. As a result, attendance has now grown to approximately 250 children who travel as far as 5 miles along dusty, rutted roads to receive even a basic half day education.
Meals. However, children who are malnourished and hungry cannot learn effectively. Kids now return home to eat a lunch of little more than a small bowl of rice and are unlikely to make the return journey. To encourage them, KHK developed a school lunch program to provide tutoring in the afternoon. Far from a simple handout, the parents of the children are themselves actually building the kitchen with donations received by people like you. You can provide a child who consistently attends the after-school program one week’s worth of meals with a small donation of only $5 — because you can supply the only well-balanced, nutritional, filling meal they have every day.
Will you make even a small donation of $5 right now? You found this page because you care about children and you want to make a difference. Because of your support, you will transform lives immediately. We want you to receive a profile of one of the lives that is being transformed by our program. “Education promotes equality and lifts people out of poverty. It teaches children how to become good citizens. Education is not just for a privileged few, it is for everyone. It is a fundamental human right.” Ban Ki-moon
